Making Layout Photos Feel Like the Real Thing

I have been messing around with my camera lately, trying to get shots of my layout that could almost pass for the real deal. The biggest game-changer? Dropping the lens right down to track level. It’s amazing how much more alive the scene looks when you’re not shooting from way above.

I don’t have fancy gear—just a basic camera and whatever light I can work with. If it’s daylight, I use it. If not, I set up a couple of softer lights so I don’t end up with those sharp, weird shadows. I’ve also found that keeping the train in crisp focus while letting the background blur just a bit really sells the shot.

Curious—do you try to nail the photo in-camera, or do you like to tweak things afterward?
