Getting into 3D printing opened up a whole new level of customization for my layout. No more hunting for rare parts—I just print what I need!

My first print was a small lineside tool shed, and I was hooked. Since then, I’ve tried my hand at custom signal boxes, freight crates, and even replacement coupler boxes that match vintage stock.

Curious—what was the first thing you printed for your layout? Are you designing your own parts or using shared files from sites like Thingiverse or Printables?

Let’s swap files, photos, tips, and printer recommendations. FDM or resin? Supports or no supports? Fail stories welcome too!

I had a very similar experience—once I realized I could print the parts I couldn’t find anywhere else, it was a total game-changer. My first print was a trackside electrical cabinet (HO scale), and even though it was a bit rough, seeing it on the layout made it all worth it.

I’ve mostly been using shared files from Thingiverse and Printables, but I’ve started dabbling in Fusion 360 for simple designs—especially when I need something super specific. Still learning, though!

I’m using an FDM printer (Ender 3 V2), and while it’s great for structures and crates, I’ve been thinking about grabbing a resin printer for finer detail—especially for figures and loco detailing parts. Supports are hit or miss for me… I’ve had a few fail catastrophically mid-print, especially with delicate walls.
