-
We all love model railroading, but I know many of us have other hobbies that fuel our creativity too. Whether it’s building dioramas, coding, gardening, writing stories, or even collecting vintage tools—those side passions often sneak their way into our layouts.
Do you find inspiration for your train world from your other interests? Maybe you’ve used skills from painting, music, or history in your modeling?
My background in photography has had a huge influence on how I approach my layout—especially with lighting, composition, and creating scenic depth. I tend to think of each scene as a potential photo, so I’m always trying to build little visual stories into the layout.
A friend of mine is a history buff, and it shows in the way he meticulously researches industries and architecture before scratch-building structures. Another buddy who loves gardening has the most stunning natural-looking scenery—he treats ground foam like flower beds!
It’s amazing how other creative outlets find their way into the hobby. That crossover not only makes layouts more personal, but also brings in fresh ideas you wouldn’t get from trains alone.
What side passions have shaped your layout?
