That moment when you play back a shot and it feels like a real train—pure magic. I’ve been experimenting with layout videos a lot lately, and it’s added a whole new creative layer to the hobby for me.
I mostly use my smartphone with a mini tripod or slider for smooth shots. For cab rides, I built a little flatcar mount for an old GoPro—perfect for tight curves and tunnels. Lighting is key too. I use some USB LED strips and a few clamp lamps to mimic golden hour or overcast moods.
I’ve started adding ambient sounds and even voiceover to tell little stories—like a day in the life of a switching crew or a freight climbing through the mountains. Nothing Hollywood-level, but it really brings character to the scenes.
