Layout videos can really bring the magic of model railroading to life!

For me, I usually shoot on the fly, but I’ve started sketching rough storyboards when I want to capture a certain mood or scene. A night run, a stormy day in a yard, or a meet-up at a rural crossing—those little “stories” make it more immersive.

I mostly use my phone with a small gimbal for smooth shots, and occasionally a GoPro for cab ride footage. Lighting is key, so I use a few LED panels to mimic natural sunlight or warm station glow.

Sound is a big deal too—I like layering in ambient sounds (birds, engines idling, crossing bells) and sometimes a bit of music to set the tone. Haven’t tried motion blur yet, but slow-mo during a steam chuff is chef’s kiss.

Curious to hear how others tackle this—especially if anyone’s using drones or animation!
