Layout videos can really bring the magic of model railroading to life!

For me, I usually shoot on the fly, but I’ve started sketching rough storyboards when I want to capture a certain mood or scene. A night run, a stormy day in a yard, or a meet-up at a rural crossing—those little “stories” make it more immersive.

I mostly use my phone with a small gimbal for smooth shots, and occasionally a GoPro for cab ride footage. Lighting is key, so I use a few LED panels to mimic natural sunlight or warm station glow.

Sound is a big deal too—I like layering in ambient sounds (birds, engines idling, crossing bells) and sometimes a bit of music to set the tone. Haven’t tried motion blur yet, but slow-mo during a steam chuff is chef’s kiss.

Curious to hear how others tackle this—especially if anyone’s using drones or animation!

We’ve all seen those model train videos that do more than just show trains—they tell a story. The lighting, the camera angles, the pacing… it all comes together to create something cinematic.

How do you approach your layout videos?

Do you storyboard or just shoot on the fly?

What gear do you use—phones, DSLR, GoPro?

Do you add sound effects, music, or narration?

Ever try motion blur or slow-mo to add drama?
