That moment when you play back a shot and it feels like a real train—pure magic. I’ve been experimenting with layout videos a lot lately, and it’s added a whole new creative layer to the hobby for me.
I mostly use my smartphone with a mini tripod or slider for smooth shots. For cab rides, I built a little flatcar mount for an old GoPro—perfect for tight curves and tunnels. Lighting is key too. I use some USB LED strips and a few clamp lamps to mimic golden hour or overcast moods.
I’ve started adding ambient sounds and even voiceover to tell little stories—like a day in the life of a switching crew or a freight climbing through the mountains. Nothing Hollywood-level, but it really brings character to the scenes.
Have you ever captured your trains in motion and thought, “This actually looks like a real railroad”? Whether it’s a sweeping cab ride, a dramatic sunset shot, or a time-lapse of a busy yard—model train videos bring layouts to life in a whole new way.
What’s your filming setup like?
Do you use GoPros, phone cameras, LED lighting, or custom rigs?
Have you added sound effects, narration, or even full stories to your videos?
